PhD Studentship in Machine Learning at University of Saint-Etienne (France)

Posted by Rebecca Martin on Tue, 15/04/2014 - 15:07

The Hubert Curien Laboratory at the University of Saint-Etienne (France) offers a three year PhD studentship, starting in September 2014, with a gross salary of approximately 1685 €/month.
The main research domain of this PhD studentship is Machine Learning, and more concretely Grammatical Inference (GI). GI deals with the learning of grammars and languages from a set of data. The main algorithms designed in this field mainly rely on the underlying syntactic structure of the language to be learnt. Nevertheless, it is well known from the (Computational) Linguistics community that syntactic information is not sufficient to deal with natural languages and many other aspects must be taken into account: semantics, discourse, pragmatics, etc. Your task will be to develop and investigate new state-of-the-art GI approaches that simultaneously exploit syntactic and contextual information during the learning process. You will have to consider both theoretical and practical aspects of this problem.

Requirements
You must have a Master's degree (or close to completion) in Computer Science. You should have a background on theoretical and algorithmic aspects of Machine Learning and/or Grammatical Inference. You must also have:
• excellent programming skills,
• curiosity and good analytical skills,
• ability to work independently,
• high motivation for theoretical and practical aspects of research,
• good oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge of Natural Language Processing, Constraint Logic Programming, Statistics and/or Linguistics is a plus.

Application
To apply, send a CV, a list of publications (if any), a copy of academic transcripts and a list of at least two referees by email to: leonor.becerra@univ-st-etienne.fr and francois.jacquenet@univ-st-etienne.fr.
The closing date for application is April 30, 2014.
Location
You will work at the Machine Learning team of the Hubert Curien Lab, at Saint-Etienne (France). The Machine Learning team is specialised in learning and mining structured data (such as sequences, trees or graphs). Saint Etienne is a medium size city with a quite low cost of living (compared to same size cities in France). You can go to Paris in less than three hours or Lyon in 40 minutes via a direct train. You will love diving into the magical Gorges de la Loire, strolling through the traditional village lanes paved in history and exploring the abundant flora and fauna in Pilat Nature Park on the fascinating footpaths.
